Entering tonight’s Chicago PD season 6 fall finale, we don’t think it was all that hard to create a narrative around Jay Halstead in trouble. The hype was real even entering the episode!
At the center of everything tonight was Marcus West, who was wrongfully imprisoned thanks in part to Jay’s arrest. He tried getting close to those he cared about in Angela and Bobby hopes of finding some sort of absolution. He thought that he could work in order to make her and Bobby’s lives better. He wanted to help.
Fundamentally, Jay got too close to the case and Marcus’ family. He thought that he could emotionally heal some wounds just because of his presence. That didn’t happen, and eventually the situation spiraled out of control. As it turns out, Angela got involved in some shady stuff in order to pay the bills and because of that, she and Jay (still under a false name) got captured. It wasn’t until later when Jay finally confessed the truth to her and, for a minute, she considered ratting him out. It wasn’t because she forgave him; instead, it was because it may have been their best overall opportunity to escape this situation and still be alive.
While Jay was captured, we saw Voight, Upton, Rojas, Atwater, and the rest of the team do everything in their power to try and help. It was mostly about connecting the dots and getting to the right people in order to ensure that they got some of the answers that they sought. That wasn’t anywhere near as easy as it seemed, and it took getting the perp’s son in order to convince him to talk.
While Intelligence closed in on Halstead’s location, he was able to free himself and take matters into his own hands. He did his best in order to escape those who were holding him hostage, leading to a physical showdown in the closing minutes. Luckily, Halstead was able to get down and try to free Angela … before at least shooting him herself.
Yes, that is your cliffhanger at the end of the episode — we don’t know whether or not Jay is alive, and even if he is, he may never be the same. (We just hope that Jesse Lee Soffer sticks around! For the record, there’s no confirmation he is leaving.)
