Following last night’s excellent American Horror Story: 1984 finale, we’re more excited for the future than we have been in years. Yet, the irony here is that now, we are facing the end of the series as we know it.
In a new interview with Deadline, show co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that there are some ideas in his head regarding the future of the show — but that he’s also preparing for season 10 to be spectacular, just in case it is the end:
We’re working on an idea for season 10 that I think people will love because it’s about reuniting fan-favorite actors to come back — because it might be our last season. It’s the last season we have contracted. So, I’ve been quietly reaching out to various people. Some people I haven’t reached out to yet because I was like ‘Do I have a role for them?’ So far, everybody I reached out to said ‘Yes’, so that’s been great.

Note that Murphy also says in the interview that there are still active discussions, and we wouldn’t be shocked that American Horror Story as a franchise is one that finds new life and could continue year after year. The reality will remain no matter what that some seasons will be less-than-perfect — it’s almost like Saturday Night Live in that way. We’re coming off of two well-received seasons for the most part, but then there are other ones like Cult and Hotel that don’t consistently have the best reviews.
For the time being, Murphy is keeping mum about the theme for season 10, though he does admit that the idea of doing something in space is rather challenging. American Horror Story does, after all, have the word “American” in it, and there is a certain element of Americana within a number of the seasons we’ve seen over the years. It would need to have a certain perspective in order for that to work.
Let’s just cross our fingers now and hope for American Horror Story season 10 premieres at some point next fall — that’s at least what we’re hoping for based on some of the past patterns for this franchise.
