NCIS season 17 episode 7 review: Did Bishop, Torres take a step forward?

Bishop and Torres

There were a number of different stories of note on NCIS season 17 episode 7 entitled “No Vacancy.” Take, for an example, an odd case about hotel surveillance and what someone stood to gain from it. In the end, we have a feeling that the political world will be rocked forever following that politician’s arrest.

Then, there was also this — the state of Bishop and Torres’ relationship. Entering tonight’s new episode, we knew that we’d be meeting Elena, his new older girlfriend. We also knew that we would be meeting her son, Ricky. As it turns out, though, Ricky is Richard, an adult son who is already decorated as a part of the military. This made things a little bit awkward, but not as awkward as Bishop choosing to go out with him.

The double-date scene involving Bishop, Ricky, Torres, and Elena has to be one of the most interesting parts of the whole hour. After all, it had to feel clear to both Ricky and Elena that Bishop and Torres have some feelings for each other. That was also clear just by Bishop going out with Ricky in the first place. It was funny seeing Palmer make it clear to Torres how he was such a good judge of people’s relationships. Apparently, he nailed things between Tony and Ziva, and has no clue of anything with Bishop and Torres.

At the end of the episode, Bishop did ask Torres if things were going to continue to be awkward for the two of them — he claimed that he was being “overprotective” of her, and also “like a sister to her.” (Probably the wrong thing to say in that moment, right?) We have a feeling that Torres and Elena broke up at the end of the episode because of Bishop, but it wasn’t entirely clear to Bishop in the end.

CarterMatt Verdict

We’re very curious about the future of Bishop and Torres after this episode, but there was some great storylines elsewhere. Take, for example, some of what transpired with Gibbs and his “secret project” throughout most of the hour — even though it was really him just helping Phineas the kid next door with his science project. We do wish that there was a little more time spent on that and Bishop/Torres both, but that’s because we’ve seen so many cases transpire on NCIS over the years. At this point, we often find ourselves craving anything that is a little bit more about the individual characters themselves.
