The Good Doctor season 4: Is renewal a lock for ABC series?
For now, here is what we know — last night, the latest new episode of the Freddie Highmore drama won its timeslot with a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also almost 6 million live viewers. It’s remained remarkably steady all season long, and while the numbers may be down versus season 2, let’s face it — we’re in a world at this point where declining ratings are somewhat the new normal. It’s almost a shock when you see a show that isn’t on the way down.
While we’re not sure a renewal will be announced this year, you could argue that The Good Doctor is right there with some of the biggest renewal locks on TV — think in the category of Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, The Flash over on The CW, or the three One Chicago series over on NBC. There are a number of reasons why these shows are all locks, but in the case of The Good Doctor, you can explain it in a few simple ways.
1. The steady ratings – That’s especially important when you consider the timeslot.
2. The international popularity – This is one of the most-watched series all over the world.
3. The star power – Highmore is a huge name within the TV world, and may go down as one of the best actors to never have an Emmy in his pocket. (Obviously, we’d rather see him get one.)
4. The inspirational tinge of the story – The Good Doctor is, fundamentally, a show that makes people feel good. While there are sad moments, we do hope that this show offers up more faith in the world.
In the end, we’re going to most likely see The Good Doctor season 4 announced before the season 3 finale. It’s the only outcome that, at least in our mind, makes a certain degree of sense.
