Superman & Lois spin-off series in development at The CW

Superman & Lois season 1

If The CW has their way, there is a chance that more than one new superhero series could find its way on the network next season.

Following the big news that there is a new Arrow spin-off in development starring Katherine McNamara, Juliana Harkavy, and Katie Cassidy, we are now hearing courtesy of Deadline that there is a new Superman & Lois series in development. This is one that would star Tyler Hoechlin as the character and then also Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. These are characters the two know well already, just as they are also characters who they will take on for the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.

The basic premise of this series is that it will revolve around “the world’s most famous Super Hero and comic books’ most famous journalist [while they] deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.” It’s a strong premise for a show, though it does also feel a little more grown-up at first glance than most of the network’s other shows. There is no will-they-or-won’t-they here — the two leads are already together and are set to be parents, as well! Yet, maybe this is meant to be a slightly different show to suit an audience that has grown up with the likes of The Flash, Arrow, and some of the other shows. Also, with Superman there isn’t really any point of a will-they-or-won’t-they when you know he and Lois are destined to be together.

Would this be a superhero show? Probably, but we imagine that it would also be a family drama and one about the various ways in which characters can be heroes.

Then, there is also this question to wonder about: Is there room for this show and an Arrow spin-off alongside The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman? We wonder if this is a sign that either another show could be cut, or if The CW will start to scale down episode orders and give you more 13-16 episode seasons and with that, give you a larger total number of shows. It could be a good idea … and also one that doesn’t exhaust the cast as much.

What do you think about the idea of a Superman & Lois series?
