NCIS season 17 episode 5 sneak peek: Can Sloane get through to Laney?

NCIS season 17 episode 5 is entitled “Wide Awake,” and we have a sense that this could be one of the most complicated mysteries of the whole season.

Think about it this way — a Marine Corporal named Laney is being accused of killing someone named Joe Cortez, and she claims that there’s no way that she would ever do something like this. If that is the case, though, what went wrong here? Who did kill this man?

As it turns out, there’s a chance that Laney did commit the murder, but has no recollection of doing so herself. In the video below, you can see her discuss how, the night before the murder, she had an intense hypnotherapy session with her doctor, who is helping her to find non-drug-related ways of falling asleep. She was able to sleep right in the middle of a video session with said doctor, so all of a sudden, the idea is floating out there that the doctor made her do it. Why do this? That’s pretty simple: It’s a way in order to ensure that the doctor didn’t kill Cortez himself, and he could’ve done so without too much evidence pointing at him.

Yet, here is one other question to think about here: What if this is all some sort of elaborate construct and Laney did do the deed? We see Sloane trying to put the pieces together in the video, but this is going to take some time to figure out. She’ll have to be able to read the situation, and possibly work in tandem with Gibbs to get more information about the doctor. In the end, the best thing that the two can do here is exercise due diligence and hope to get answers using all of the information available.
