For some time on The Blacklist, we’ve wondered about what happened with Cooper, Reddington, and Kuwait. It’s something that was planted all the way back in the first season. There have been references to it since, but not in any way similar to what the show is going to be doing soon. After all, it looks like the writers are diving head-first into the story and exploring all sorts of interesting odds and ends!

“Kuwait” is an episode airing a week from Friday, and within this, you’ll learn exactly how much Cooper knew about Reddington dating back to the operation that happened there. It’s something that Reddington can hold over him to a certain degree, and it’s also going to show that Harold himself can still operate within a world of gray, though it may not appear that way at times.

Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, here is some of what executive producer Jon Bokenkamp had to say about what to expect:

“…We have a great Cooper story that we’re telling this season. Even all the way back to the first season, we talked about Red and Cooper having a little secret about Kuwait. We’re going to revisit Kuwait very soon, and the nefarious things that happened between Reddington and Cooper back in Kuwait are going to bubble back up and influence how Cooper is feeling about Red not being Red and the task force moving forward with this stranger, this Russian operative. Cooper is the guy who does the right thing. He’s a moral figure, and he is going to be saddled quite soon with making a decision about what to do with the task force. Cooper and his past are going to get dragged into that decision-making process in a really emotional and personal way.”

Could this secret somehow impact things when it comes to Cooper’s relationship with Liz and the rest of the Task Force? We’re dealing with Raymond Reddington and because of that, all options are on the table.
