Rather than issue a press release for a new episode airing on Tuesday, October 29, what the network did this week was make it clear that this night will feature a repeat of the season 15 episode “She” instead. Why air a repeat then rather than a new installment? There are two simple reasons that we can think of.
1. Production convenience – It ultimately just makes so much more sense for CBS to have repeats here and there. That way, they can ensure that the series stays ahead of production and things aren’t too rushed behind the scenes. While they got a few months’ head start of filming earlier this summer, CBS catches up to them throughout the year.
2. Halloween week – We do think that networks ease up a little bit on new episodes around October 31, mostly for the reason that they want to ensure that there isn’t too much content that suffers. Plus, at this point they’ve aired enough new episodes that it’s okay if they miss a week. They’ll pick up from it just fine.
We do think that it is curious that “She,” as opposed to a new episode from this season, is the repeat they’re choosing. Why do that? We think it’s a reference to how NCIS wants to take viewers back to the beginning of the Ziva story, as they plan to keep emphasizing it moving forward. Meanwhile, we also don’t think that it’s lost on them that this is one of their highest-rated episodes of the past year and it makes some sense to keep milking it.
In the end, NCIS season 17 has a lot of stories still to tell — and rest assured, you’ll be seeing a lot of them in November. Airing a repeat at the end of October helps the confirm it.
