Outlander season 7 renewal: Should Starz consider it already?

Outlander season 4

We know that it may seem early for Starz to start to have some conversations about Outlander season 7, but is it really? How early is too early to get the metaphorical ball rolling?

We understand that in some ways, having this conversation now may feel like doing it too early. What’s the point in generating this conversation before filming on season 5 is even done? Yet, you could also argue that there were even earlier times to generate this conversation, based of course on a number of factors separate from the actual production in Scotland.

Take, for example, this — the fact that there is already work being done from a writing point of view in the sixth season. Scripts are being worked on, and beyond just that, the story is being mapped out. Don’t you think that it would benefit them to know, on some level, if this is the final season? If it is, it’s beneficial to plan accordingly as opposed to putting out there a cliffhanger, one that doesn’t get resolved until the following season.

For the time being, let’s relish in this fact: There has been no public talk of Outlander ending with season 6. When the show was renewed for two seasons some time ago, we don’t think it was one of those two-season renewals done (we see this here and there) with the intention to shut everything down. Instead, what we thought about it then was that this was a way to make sure there was a small hiatus between season 5 and season 6, that way there wasn’t a long period of time between the two airing on Starz. If it’s not possible to have a new season of Outlander every 12 months, we’re sure that Starz would want to have one every 13 or 14 months.

Given that there are ten books planned by Diana Gabaldon in this series, you have to think that this is a strong indicator that the writers are going to plot out for there to be this many seasons … but nothing is guaranteed. There are ratings to examine and financial factors that weigh in; it’s different than a book, where it comes down mostly to an author’s creative vision. Sure, there are hypothetical situations where publishers change and the like, but it’s easier to deliver the story in the end in some medium than it is a big-budget television show.

We’d like to think that there is momentum for a season 7 to happen but, if nothing else, it feels like there had to be some conversations behind the scenes already, even if they were preliminary ones laying the groundwork for what could be coming. Maybe these conversations turn into confirmation later on, but we can’t be too optimistic that news is imminent. As a matter of fact, we’ll be lucky to hear something more by the summer.

Do you remain hopeful in an Outlander season 7 happening?
