This Is Us season 4 episode 3 preview: Mysteries around ‘Unhinged’

This Is Us season 2

This Is Us season 4 episode 3 next week carries with it the title of “Unhinged” … and it’s kinda clear at the moment that NBC doesn’t want you to know a whole lot else about it. As of press time, the next has not released an official synopsis, though the name itself does bring to mind a couple of different things.

Rage has, in one way or another, been a part of the show for some time. Jack and Nicky Pearson grew up with an unhinged father, and the two of them experienced things within Vietnam that would unravel any person. Nicky was unhinged more than anyone we’ve seen due to the war, and since that time, it’s fair to assume that a lot has transpired with him. There are many secrets that we’ve yet to learn, and with Griffin Dunne now set as a series regular, it’s fair to assume that more information will be coming our way.

How can you have an episode of This Is Us entitled “Unhinged” and not include Nicky? If we were to throw a theory about this episode out there prior to its publication, this would, without a doubt, be it. In the present, there’s more to learn about the dynamic between Nicky and Kevin, if there is a larger connection between him and Cassidy, and how he ends up being at Rebecca’s bedside at that season 3 finale flash-forward. This episode could provide more of a foundation, but with there being two more seasons beyond this one, there is plenty of time still in order to fill in a number of those cracks.
