Grey’s Anatomy season 16 spoilers: Jo’s treatment will be spotlighted

Grey's Anatomy season 14

We know on Grey’s Anatomy season 16 that Jo is in the midst of a stay at treatment. Meanwhile, we also know that coming up, the character will be leaving and resuming her career. She’s spent a good month working on herself, but you won’t see all of what happened to her there right away.

Instead, the series is plotting to showcase more of Jo’s story arc in a special episode a little bit later this season, one where they will jump back in time and give a little bit more of a sense of everything that happened there. Speaking via TV Guide, here is some of what executive producer Krista Vernoff had to say about what to expect when that story airs:

“We had her in inpatient treatment for 30 days in the premiere; we didn’t spend a ton of time there. So, we do have an episode coming up in the first quarter of the season where we flash back and tell a little bit more of the story of her time there which I think will be really cool and interesting for the fans to see … I think it’s really significant and important right now, in the world, to talk about mental health and the different ways that we can treat it, treat a health crisis, a mental health crisis.”

We also think this story is going to be appropriate just because there are so few shows out there that really take an honest look at these sort of crises, or what it can be like to be treated within one of these sort of centers. So often, they’re just labeled with some extremely-inaccurate stigma or presented mistakenly as an asylum where people are just permanently housed. There are so many different variations and nuances and, in the end, this is a place designed to get someone like Jo better — and we certainly hope that she is.
