What’s coming up on The Good Doctor season 3 episode 2? This is an episode entitled “Debts,” one that is going to test Shaun Murphy all over again.
We think one of the big, fundamental questions to ask about Freddie Highmore’s character entering this episode is simply this: How willing is he going to be in order to take big risks? How far is he going to jump for that desired result? Remember that this is a guy who already lost his position at the St. Bonaventure Hospital once, and he does need to walk a rather-fine line to ensure that there is nothing else that happens to him. It’s going to be a journey for him — an emotional one with a number of different highs and lows. He’s always going to lean into his capabilities, but there are going to be others who inevitably question those.

In the promo below, one of the big things that you see is Dr. Andrews and Shaun having a conversation, one that is geared all around whether Shaun can continue to try and achieve the impossible. How much effort should he put into a patient that could be incurable? He still wants to try … to the surprise of no one. This is where the quote in the title is said: “Sometimes, the hero loses.”
Throughout the third season, we’ll see Shaun continue to understand more what it means to be the hero — but also, being willing to accept your own frailty and your own recognition to make mistakes. These are going to happen that Shaun cannot control, and sometimes, you have to just accept that this is okay. You have to be willing to recognize how far is too far to put yourself on the line.
Through everything that we’ve seen so far, there is at least one thing we can say with a certain degree of confidence: Tonally, The Good Doctor is out to be as emotional and powerful as ever.
