The Affair season 5 episode 5 spoilers: Does Noah really love Helen?

With The Affair season 5 episode 5 arriving on Showtime this weekend, we’re going to see the continued highs and lows of Noah and Helen. These two have a history — and it may have been good at one point. Yet, it’s also been broken and torn up by repair — largely the result of Noah’s own actions. He’s cheated, he’s hurt her, and he’s caused her to ask so many hard questions of herself.

So what happens when Noah admits to Helen that he still loves her on Sunday’s new episode? Suffice it to say, it’s going to generate quite the reaction from her. In a new sneak peek (which you can watch here), Noah decides to lay it all on the line to her. He admits to still having feelings and that he wishes that there was a way that the two of them could work through some of their issues. He wants to be there for her, and he claims that his love makes him worthy of a second chance.

But does it? Is there anything about this love that differentiates it from everything else that Noah has had within his life? In Helen’s mind, she’s still struggling to deal with the mere motivations behind it. She doesn’t fully understand if this is love generated from a real, genuine place, and something born more out of jealousy. Is this Noah wanting what he cannot have, and that is a place in her heart now that she has Sasha Mann?

From our vantage point, it’s clear that what is upsetting Noah the most is that Sasha is playing a version of himself within the upcoming movie — and that Noah feels like this is largely a projection of him as opposed to the real one. It’s idealistic and in his mind, it’s that break from reality that bothers him. Also, we do still wonder if Sasha is some sort of method actor who is getting close to Helen just for the sake of better understanding her and getting a good sense of what his overall work needs to be.
