The Affair season 5 episode 5 preview: The Sierra spotlight

As we approach The Affair season 5 episode 5, are we going to see a story told mostly from Sierra’s point of view? It seems to be a weird thing to think about, but this may be very well what we end up seeing here!

Let’s face it — with Cole and Allison no longer a part of this series, the Showtime drama is working to expand its focus elsewhere. The value in doing this with someone like Sierra is mostly that it allows you to see another aspect of Helen’s life. We don’t think that we can call the two friends, but they’ve had a relationship over the past couple of seasons. She’s also a new mother, someone who has relied significantly on Helen as a source of support and advice.

So what happens when Helen, all of a sudden, isn’t quite there for Sierra like she once was? One of the things that we saw on tonight’s new episode was Helen do whatever she can in order to build up her career. Also, she’s dating Sasha Mann now and there is a lot of emotional stuff that comes along with that. We’re talking here about someone who is always going to be in the spotlight … and that means more of a spotlight on her, as well.

Sierra struggles to balance motherhood with her burgeoning acting career; Sierra’s mother visits uninvited; Helen works her first design gig and begins to focus on herself.

In the end, it’s great that Helen is able to focus on herself. Yet, one of the things that we’ve learned through The Affair is that through every action is a consequence. We’re probably going to see more of a balance of things around her; if that doesn’t happen, the life around Helen that she’s worked to prop up for so long is going to suddenly start to fall apart.
