Dancing with the Stars 28 premiere ratings offer good, bad news

Dancing with the Stars

The first ratings are in for the Dancing with the Stars season 28 premiere, and we’d go ahead and give them a 6 out of 10, if we were using one of the judges’ paddles.

Why is that? Well, the first episode of the long-running ballroom hit since late 2018 ended up drawing eight million live viewers as well as a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. While these numbers aren’t necessarily Terrible by any means, they don’t necessarily represent that the long hiatus did the show any good. It’s a slight increase in viewers from the start of season 27, but it’s more or less even in the demo.

Typically, you would look at steady ratings from one year to the next as a big win, and maybe in the end, it will end up being the case here. Yet, we had slightly bigger expectations for last night’s new episode given that the season 27 premiere aired opposite the start of all fall TV. It had to air opposite The Voice, The Resident, and a number of other popular shows. Last night, Dancing with the Stars didn’t have anywhere near the same level of competition, unless of course you include a terrible game of Monday Night Football over on ESPN. It could have gotten off to a bigger ratings start, and with a lot of those big shows coming back next week, we do expect the numbers to fall a little bit.

In the end, if Dancing with the Stars posts somewhat similar numbers to this for the remainder of the season, you can probably expect it to come back for more. While this show may not be an enormous hit anymore in the demo, it does continue to post rather big total audiences as a whole. Dancing with the Stars has a tendency to skew a little bit older than the majority of most other reality shows on the air. That’s one of the reasons why you do end up seeing older celebrities on the show sometimes, as they are a way to bring in some of these older viewers and make sure they stay committed. However, we see Dancing with the Stars casting people like Hannah Brown & Ally Brooke as them trying to do everything that they can to make young viewers excited and engaged.
