Yellowstone season 3: Could John Dutton’s father return?
While we do think that a show like Yellowstone benefits from being set mostly in the present, there are some benefits that come here and there from being able to explore the past. Take, for example, the opportunity to dive into what makes John as a father tick. Why is he the person that he is, and how did he become the person that he is? One way or another, both of those questions are interesting … and it gives you a good sense of the sort of stuff the writers and producers could take on within the new season.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though Coleman knows one way or another if he’ll be back. He confirms as much in a new interview with TVInsider, He did have nothing but kind words for his scene partner Costner, referring to him as “a total pro, very sensitive guy, very talented guy, very professional, very serious.” We’ll see what the writers have planned from here, as John could look towards the past for answers once more.
Think about things this way — a lot of Yellowstone as a series is about legacy, and John knows that the ranch and the family carry with them a certain punch and power from the years that they’ve been existence. Yet, there’s also a recognition (especially from Beth) that some elements of the past could eventually be in tatters. Nothing stays the same forever, and there are only going to be more and more threats on the land. On the other side of Malcolm Beck, there is likely an even Bigger Bad out there. This is the way of life sometimes, and it is certainly the way of things in TV.
