The Crown season 4 spoilers: Gillian Anderson casting finally confirmed

Crown season 3

It took Netflix long enough, but today, they opted to 100% confirm the casting of Gillian Anderson on The Crown season 4. The former X-Files star is going to have an especially notable role — after all, who wouldn’t want the role of Margaret Thatcher? While she may not be as etched in the history books as Queen Elizabeth II, she is one of the most famous British Prime Ministers of all time. She was the first woman Prime Minister, and she served for more than a decade. That’s plenty of time for her to leave her mark on history.

In a statement confirming the casting, Anderson had the following to say:

“I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman … Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.”

The reality here is that you’re going to be waiting for a really long time in order to see Anderson on the series. After all, The Crown season 3 isn’t even set to debut on Netflix until later this year, so you’re going to be forced to wait for probably another year at least in order to see her. Yet, it does feel like The Crown is looking to have a shorter break between seasons 3 and 4 than they did seasons 2 and 3. Part of the reason for this is the simple fact that they’ve already cast a number of their big names and they’ll be sticking around for season 4 — that includes Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth.

For Anderson, her role on The Crown comes after her major role on Netflix’s Sex Education. She came back and played Scully again for two seasons of The X-Files, but opted to walk away from the project after that. Fox doesn’t appear to have any plans for the future of the franchise, and we don’t think we want it without the character.

We’re going to go ahead and go out on a limb here — The Crown is going to continue to be exceptional — it’s hard to imagine anything otherwise.
