The Flash season 6 is premiering on The CW a little bit later this fall, and it feels like with every season comes a different iteration of Barry Allen. Such is the case with the latest update that we’ve got now!
If you look below, you can see what is the first official image (via TVLine) of Grant Gustin sporting what may very well be the most comic-accurate costume that we’ve seen him in so far. the first thing that is noticeable about this outfit is the presence of the chinstrap, which was absent from the suit last season.
What’s our feeling from that? It’s almost a combination of a couple of different things. On some level, we’re happy that it’s a part of the costume again since it’s so much more natural to what we expect from The Flash as a character. However, it’s also probably not that much fun for Gustin as a performer — it restricts ultimately what he can do with his face and it doesn’t feel like the most comfortable thing for him to have on in the world. Out of any of the heroes within the Arrowverse, he probably has the most difficult costume to wear on a daily basis — it doesn’t offer a whole lot in the way of breathing room and we don’t see that changing too much in the future.
One of the goals behind the change in costume for the new season was to probably bring the character a little bit more in line with the Crisis on Infinite Earths version of Barry that has been present ever since the newspaper headlines so many years ago. (Of course, if the show really wanted to it could have argued that the change in costume was one of the many changes in the timeline. They could’ve found a way to get out of this situation if they got creative enough about it in the end.) We do think that it also probably helps on some level with merchandising and getting a little bit more attention around the show. It’s hard to envision a scenario where that doesn’t happen here.
What do you want to see when it comes to The Flash season 5?
