This Is Us season 4: Show boss already looking towards series finale?

This Is Us season 4 isn’t the final season — we already know that. NBC renewed the series earlier this year through season 6, and there’s a lot of speculation out there that this could be the final season. Nothing is 100% at the moment.

What we can say is that a LOT of the series finale is already planned out. Heck, the next three seasons are! That’s something that executive producer Dan Fogelman confirmed in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times. He also has 35 pages of the series finale already done! While we know that network executives often like to have a good idea as to where their series is going leading up to the finale, they don’t often get THIS level of detail. Yet, this is a show that jumps around so much in time and plays with so many different concepts that we imagine having this much foresight on what your show is and also where you want it to go is necessary. It allows it to keep the continuity flowing through each timeline — maybe you make a few changes here and there depending on audience reaction, but it gives you a chance to make sure the landing sticks at the end.

As Fogelman explains, there is also another reason why he’s chosen to plan This Is Us out — he recognizes how rare this opportunity is:

“I’ve made a lot of two-year shows … The odds of being able to stay on the air long enough to execute a long-term plan are so slim, it feels like a fool’s errand.”

One of the things that we’ve been told through a lot of This Is Us season 4 promotional material already is that it’s possible that the show has some more surprises in the works, one that will blow our socks off and give us a whole lot more to be excited about. While his plan may be locked in, that doesn’t mean that the story is predictable.
