Suits season 9 episode 6 review: How far is too far?

Suits

Suits season 9 episode 6 proved to be a story about a number of different things, with the primary one being a debate over the conscience of some of the show’s main characters. How far should they go for the sake of pursuing justice? What is the limit? These are just some of the questions that the writers threw out there into the universe as this episode was largely a quest to see if one Samantha Wheeler could be saved.

Well, we’ve not got an answer (for now), and it’s for the time being, no. Harvey, Donna, and even Robert Zane worked as hard as they could to get dirt on who Faye Richardson was in order to remove her from the firm and ensure that they could get Samantha back. However, the problem is it’s hard to get a lot of dirt on someone when they’re not altogether dirty. What Samantha showed throughout this story is that she’s relatively impervious to a lot of the various stuff that you throw at her.

The only way that the firm found to go at her was over some shady business from her ex-husband that she did her best in order to cover up. However, once they realized the reason why she tried to cover it up, all of a sudden this was not an altogether appealing option anymore. She was just trying to protect her child so that they didn’t realize that their father had done some shady stuff, so it was about preserving her family more than just breaking the rules to win a case for personal gain.

This is where the firm developed a new sense of conscience — despite the temptation, they couldn’t go through with ruining Faye. She’s still there, and maybe in showing her more of a heart, the firm can be rid of her a little sooner rather than later. They just need to make sure they don’t cross too many ethical lines and after the fact, maybe there’s a way to bring Samantha back.

For the time being, though, Samantha’s being handed another mission — an opportunity to go search for her biological father. She wants nothing more than family, but she may not love what she finds at the end of all of this.

What’s going on with Katrina and Brian?

The two went at each other in court during this episode, but throughout this episode, Katrina realized that Brian had taken on this case intentionally to spend some time with her. He was struggling with letting go and, at this point, Katrina couldn’t handle that and wanted to move forward. She struggled, as well, with her morality doing battle with someone who she considered to be a strong friend. It was Susan who convinced her to go for broke and make sure that the case could be thrown out — she didn’t owe Brian too much of anything other than respect and making sure he got a heads-up on matters in advance.

There is no sort of half-measure that can come within a case like this, and after everything that Katrina has been through, it’s nice for her to be able to see the light at the end of it.

CarterMatt Verdict

Suits season 9 episode 6 proved itself to be a story largely about characters realizing important truths, including how important it is sometimes to walk away from situations that are too complicated and make you feel like less of your true self. It may not be an easy thing to do at times, but you’re much better for it when the dust settles.
