Instinct star Alan Cumming reacts to cancellation after two seasons

Instinct

Yesterday, the oh-so-sad news came out that CBS is canceling Instinct after two seasons — and that’s still something we’re trying to come to grips with. We understand why it’s ending (the ratings for most of the second season have not been great), but we do still have a prevailing sense of sadness over it. In between this show getting canceled and Elementary now ending, we’ve now lost two of the best mystery shows on the air.

In a new post on Instagram (see below), you can get a little bit more insight on what star Alan Cumming has to say about the cancellation of the show. He thanked executive producer Michael Rauch, many of his colleagues including co-star Bojana Novakovic, the talented crew, and more. Above all else, he recognizes the impact that the show may have. He had a chance to play an openly-gay lead on a major network television show, something that is still revolutionary in 2019. Viewers of Instinct may have had a chance to watch this and realize that it’s okay to be yourself; or, it may have allowed viewers to get an added sort of perspective on people who are different.

If Instinct does manage to touch and impact the lives of just a small percentage of its viewers, then clearly it’s doing a very good thing for the world.

There are three more episodes of Instinct to air, including two following Big Brother on CBS tomorrow.

So the word is out. @instinctcbs will not be returning for a third season. Almost exactly three years ago I was sent a galley copy of a book by @jamespattersonbooks and @howardroughan and then I met the show runner @mbr34 who was to adapt it for TV and I jumped in. And I’m still in, for two more episodes tomorrow and the last one ever next Sunday. And while I’m sorry I won’t be getting to play with @bojnovak and the rest of the amazing cast and crew again, I’m grateful for two seasons of fun and gore and feeling like a dandy thanks to @danlawsonstyle’s costumes, and selfies with corpses and vegan options at catering and Lala’s occasional guest appearances in the police station when she got bored in her basket beneath my desk. I’m also proud to have played the first every leading character in a US network drama who is gay. Yes, really. Because of @instinctcbs millions of people will have seen a same sex marriage portrayed for the first time and I hope we changed and opened some minds in the process.
