Shameless season 10: Cameron Monaghan on Ian, Mickey’s future

Shameless season 8

Shameless season 10 is premiering this fall on Showtime and for fans of Ian and Mickey, there’s a lot to enjoy. As a matter of fact, the promise of Gallavich storytelling is one of the reasons why Cameron Monaghan even came back.

Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, Monaghan admits that he had no plans to come back as a regular after his initial departure in season 9, and it took some convincing on the part of executive producer John Wells in order for him to come back. What appealed to him was the opportunity to explore the very-much messy relationship between Ian and Mickey, who had been together off and on during the series. Yet, they hadn’t really been together for a long period of time in a fairly normal environment — and when you think about Shameless, prison somehow becomes considered a normal environment. We don’t know how that happens, but that’s the way things are with this show.

Ultimately, Monaghan describes to the website some of what you can expect to see for these two characters now:

“Like any romantic relationship, you need a healthy level of distance and separation, and that’s something not afforded to them. They’re in a challenging place and trying to work through their issues. Now, the way that people work through their issues on Shameless tends to be pretty volatile. I won’t exactly say how they work on solving them, but I will say it involves shivs and stabbings. [Laughs]”

We’re going to get a chance through this upcoming season to see all sorts of crazy highs and lows for Mickey and Ian, and a big part of the fun coming up is going to be seeing just how these characters contend with that. How are they going to be able to handle living in close quarters, and what happens if one of them gets out? That’s something else to wonder about in the long-term.

For now, just know that we’re getting a substantial story here — for the first time in years, Noel Fisher is returning as a series regular. That’s going to give him a lot of time to explore things.
