In a new sneak peek from the finale via Entertainment Tonight, it is revealed that three years have transpired since the end of this past episode. Since that time, Sherlock has been working and operating from the shadows under a wide array of different names and personas, working to take down people in all different shapes and forms. At some point, clearly, Watson discovered that Sherlock was alive — it was either that or she was aware of his scheme the whole time.
So what brings the two together now? It may be a couple of different things. For example, there may be an opportunity afoot in order to take down Odin Reichenbach once and for all, provided of course Sherlock’s previous plan did not work. (Remember that his original goal was to fake his own death so that Odin would be accused of it, leading to him having to spend a good chunk of his life behind bars.) It could also be the return of Jamie Moriarty to the world — Sherlock mentions Moriarty’s name at the end of the sneak peek and while we don’t see the character, we know that she will factor heavily into the story. Having the big time jump likely allows this.
There is also one other question that we’re wondering — is Watson going to accomplish her dream of adopting? We wonder given that she’s wearing something that feels like a jersey and she doesn’t have the same vibe about her in the preview to what we’ve seen before.
