Succession season 2: Does the cast know who will take over?

Succession season 1

At the heart of Succession season 2, there remains the same question that existed for much of season 1 — who will end up taking over Logan Roy’s company? It’s a fascinating subject to think about, and it’s something that could play out in an enormous fashion over the coming episodes … though there may not be an answer.

For Sarah Snook, in some ways it’s a surprise in itself that Shiv would be considered a contender — after all, it wasn’t always the case for the character that she would want it. Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, here is what the actress had to say about her arc:

“I suppose you could say there’s quite a direction change for Shiv … Jesse (Armstrong, Succession creator) had told me originally that she wasn’t really interested in taking over the company, but as soon as it gets dangled in front of her with a little more seriousness, it’s something that she kind of jumps at. I guess that’s quite telling for the psychology of all these kids, they’re magnetically always drawn back to the company.”

On paper, it feels like Shiv is actually the most capable person to eventually take over her father’s company — she’s smart, she’s cunning, and she doesn’t have the same pitfalls as some of the other characters. Yet, we’ve also come to know one thing from real-life corporate America — just because you are the most qualified for the gig doesn’t mean that you get it. Sometimes, you get passed over due to some sort of bias, or simply because the boss is closer to someone else.

What is interesting to know, though, is that not even Snook herself knows who will eventually sit atop this show’s version of the iron throne:

I’ve no idea who would be the final successor. But I imagine that, whoever is, probably wouldn’t hold on to it for very long.

We’re not sure that Succession will feel the need to answer this in the near future. After all, think in terms of this — season 2 is poised to be one of TV’s breakout hits. It wasn’t until the end of season 1 when a lot of viewers were aware of it. If the ratings are big, it could go on for many more years.
