Doctor Who 60th anniversary special: Could it actually happen?
For the time being, our thought process on this is simple: It feels silly to 100% rule it out. This is a special that we got for the 50th anniversary, and it allowed Matt Smith and David Tennant to spend a generous amount of time together. Entering a possible 60th anniversary, meanwhile, there’s a chance to incorporate even more modern Doctors. Think along the lines of Peter Capaldi or Jodie Whittaker, who is currently in the lead roles. (Despite a lot of the rumors that are out there, Jodie is not leaving the show in the middle of filming.)
If a 60th anniversary special happens, it’s not going to be for a while — think in terms of 2023. There may not be any serious conversation at the moment because of it. Yet, that may change in a year or two when there are some ideas that may start to swirl. There are a few factors to consider here, including whether the BBC is interested in doing it, who would be interested in appearing, and also who would want to write the script. It would take months, if not years, of planning, but it would certainly draw some big ratings.
One thing that we can say is that David Tennant is open to the idea. Speaking via the Radio Times, Tennant made it clear that he had an interest in working with all of them, should the opportunity arise:
“Jodie [Whittaker], Peter [Capaldi] and Matt [Smith] are all mates now. It would be wonderful to be on set with them.”

For the time being, the top priority when it comes to all things Doctor Who is simply this — making sure that season 12 is as great as possible. After that, then the producers can start thinking about season 13. A 60th anniversary special would probably be a discussion point more for a possible season 14 or 15, which could premiere in 2022/2023, depending on scheduling.
