Doctor Who season 12: Jodie Whittaker, showrunner not quitting
Over the past few days, rumors have started to spread thanks to message boards and social-media discussions that Chibnall had quit the sci-fi series midway through production on the season, and that Whittaker (who worked with him on Broadchurch long before coming on board Doctor Who) was departing in solidarity. The idea of this happening at this point felt absurd from the get-go, mostly because a lead actor leaving a show during production is almost unheard of. Think about the headaches that this would cause for all parties involved!
Now, there’s some further verification that all of this chatter is false. Speaking via the Radio Times, a source close to Doctor Who had the following to say on the subject:
“This is all total nonsense … This has originated and spread through the online rumour mill.”

With this statement in mind, it feels like we don’t have anything to worry about. The idea of Chibnall and/or Whittaker departing can be revisited at the end of this season. Two seasons would be a relatively short run for both a Doctor and a showrunner, but we’ve certainly come to know over time that this is a show that has change written all over its DNA. We also know that it’s an extremely demanding job, one where few people ever praise you when you’re doing awesome and you get blamed extensively for when things aren’t going well. This is especially true for being a showrunner.
Doctor Who and the BBC has been keeping most of its season 12 details close to the vest. We know that the Judoon are going to be returning, and there will continue to be other rumors that pop up across the internet. Now that Chibnall has shown off some classic villains, we do anticipate a few others stopping by whether it be this season or down the road.
