Grey’s Anatomy season 16 spoilers: Could someone be returning?

Is there a chance that we could get a familiar face turning back up on Grey’s Anatomy over season 16? There’s nothing guaranteed at present, but there is a reason to feel hopeful.

Speaking in a new interview with TVLine, show executive producer Krista Vernoff made it clear that she’s in the process of getting a former cast member on board — it may not be as a series regular, but it’s better than nothing at all:

“I’m trying to get someone back … There’s someone I’m hoping will make an appearance this year, [but] it’s a real maybe. I’m trying.”

So who could this returning cast member be? There are a number of possibilities out there. Take, for example, Sara Ramirez, who recently was announced as departing from Madam Secretary before its sixth and final season. Meanwhile, Kate Walsh as Addison would be fascinating due to her history with so many different characters, and Jessica Capshaw as Arizona or Sarah Drew as April will both be welcome. These two characters left the series a little more recently, and especially with April and Jackson co-parenting, there is always going to be a reason to bring her back to the show.

We suppose that there are some distant possibilities out there as well. We know that there will always be people, for example, intrigued in seeing Sandra Oh back as Cristina Yang; yet, she’s made it clear multiple times that she’s happy with moving forward in her career and if you haven’t seen Killing Eve yet you really need to check that out – she’s fantastic in it! This feels like something that could happen in the series finale, if that. Meanwhile, Shonda Rhimes has shown zero interest in bringing back Katherine Heigl; while Vernoff is now running the show, we’re not sure there is a tangible reason to bring Izzie back.

Grey’s Anatomy season 16 is going to be premiering on ABC a little bit later this fall.
