Sara Ramirez leaving Madam Secretary, Kat Sandoval before season 6
In a new post on Twitter, Sara Ramirez confirmed that she was going to be departing the show as a series regular following a couple of years on the show as Kat Sandoval. Kat was a formidable strategist and a valuable person in Elizabeth McCord’s inner circle, and her exit comes as a surprise given that it did feel like someone with her skill set would be beneficial for Elizabeth on the campaign trail.
Yet, here’s where things get interesting: There may not even be a campaign trail. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the CBS show is going to be kicking off the final season with a two-year time jump — by the time the premiere airs in early October, Elizabeth McCord will be President of the United States. The show is skipping over the campaign, and the publication quotes CBS’ executive vice president of current affairs Amy Reisenbach as saying the following:
“We are doing about a two-year time jump … When we come back, Elizabeth will be president. It will be about 100 days into her presidency.”
Why make this move? It’s definitely surprising, and the only thing that we can fathom as being behind it is the show trying to mix things up and focus on issues that are impacting the country on a Presidential level. It’s also possible that doing a final season about a campaign would drift the series far from its semi-procedural roots. We’re still surprised by the move, mostly because it felt like this was the producers’ chance to sort of mirror things that are going on with Presidential campaigns at the moment within the real world.
Nonetheless, Madam Secretary season 6 is going to bring you the same topical, fantastic storytelling that you’ve seen through the past few years … though we’re going to miss Ramirez every step of the way. For those wondering, we don’t think this means a Grey’s Anatomy return is imminent … though it would be fun.
