Outlander season 5 casting news: Mark Barrett on board!
In a new post on Twitter, Mark Barrett confirms his management group’s announcement that he is joining the show for a “featured role” this coming season. It’s not often you get castings like this announced during the season, and it does help to pose the further question of who he could play. The easiest guess, due to his physical resemblance to Richard Rankin, is that he could be playing William Buccleigh MacKenzie a.k.a. “Buck” — a character featured at around this portion of the Diana Gabaldon source material. He is the illegitimate son of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan, and he could prove to be a fascinating character to bring into the North Carolina world of this show.
In general, Outlander has many big castings to still announce if they are going in deep on The Fiery Cross — there are several new faces within that book as the world of Fraser’s Ridge and beyond expands. Regardless of who Barrett ends up playing, we hope that he makes a big impact and gets to stick around for longer than just a few minutes.
While Barrett may not be a household name for many of you out there, what Outlander has done a tremendous job at these past several seasons is finding people who can immerse themselves fully into their roles. This show often makes stars of the people that they cast, with Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and Sophie Skelton being prime examples of that. Rankin is actually one of the few major actors on the show right now who we were familiar with prior to their work on Outlander.
As reported frequently these past few days, Outlander season 5 is set to premiere on Starz in early 2020, and our hope is that season 6 will be coming not long after the fact in 2021. We’re excited to dive into sharing more updates as soon as they come out.
