Supernatural season 15: Jensen Ackles on possible series finale ending

What lies ahead on Supernatural season 15? There are a number of powerful, individual reveals that could be coming throughout the final season — but the series finale is the part that is the most anticipated. Or for some, it is the part that is the most feared.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from covering TV for the past decade, it’s this — no series finale makes everyone happy. There are going to be people who call the end of Supernatural terrible — the cast and crew have to accept that in advance. Some shows (think The Sopranos) get a little artsy at the end and that frustrates people. Meanwhile, some other shows (think Game of Thrones) just make people mad with the creative direction of the story. And then shows like Dexter just make us all shake our heads and wonder what happened in the writers room the day that decision was made.

In the case of Supernatural, even Jensen Ackles is admitting that he had a hard time accepting the end of the story in advance. Why is that? As he explained via TVLine, a big part of it was just recognizing that the end of the road was near:

“When we were in the room and the idea came down the pipe, everybody was kind of signed off on it … My reaction was more like, ‘OK, OK.’ I struggled with it for about a week or so, and then I realized I’m too invested, I’m too emotional. I’m too close to this character. To see anything with finality on it, it’s just hard to digest. I talked to a few people about it and got some clarity on it and have tried to look at it from a different perspective. I, now, have come around to being like, ‘This is a really good ending. This is satisfying.’”

Meanwhile, executive producer Robert Singer made it clear that there was also a positive conversation with creator Eric Kripke about the ending of the show — even though he may no longer be involved behind the scenes, getting his stamp of approval is still important.

Filming on the series finale will likely come in the new year, and judging from how emotional Ackles and Jared Padalecki were at San Diego Comic-Con, many tears are going to be shed.
