On tonight’s Agents of SHIELD season 6 episode, we got something that we don’t get every week these days: A Ghost Rider mention! There are similarities between the Spirit of Vengeance and what is going on with Izel and Sarge, at least in terms of a being that is able to transfer itself into physical bodies. That seems to be a part of the origin story of Sarge, someone who isn’t a person so much as a creation.
Because of the aforementioned similarities, is it possible that we actually see Ghost Rider this season? It’s something to think about.
Let’s start by making the biggest case for it, starting with a reminder that there is a Ghost Rider series coming to Hulu. It makes a certain degree of sense to want to bring this character on board this show, if for no other reason than cross-marketing. Sure, it could also be helpful to SHIELD in order to understand what they are up against. It could also bridge the gap between this show and the spin-off, which is going to be set within a different place but will still feature Gabriel Luna as the title character.
Oh, and there’s also this little tease in the form of the Agents of SHIELD season 6 finale synopsis: “With time running short, the team will have to go to hell and back to stop the end of everything. Who will survive?” Either this is ABC just wanting to make a “hell and back” metaphor, or they’re teasing something involving the actual Ghost Rider character. Given that we’re just a couple of weeks away from the finale airing, the timing feels about right to build towards something … and we hope that they do. It would be a great reprisal from a popular comic-book character and it could prove to be very much fantastic in setting up both the endgame here and the seventh and (alas) final season.
Yeah, it’s still going to take a while for the final-season news to settle in, even though we’ve been expecting it a while.
