The Affair season 5 spoilers: Anna Paquin teases older Joanie

What’s coming up on The Affair season 5? There are so many interesting factors at play at the moment, but getting to see Older Joanie is one of the more important parts of the story at the moment. We’re talking about someone who has spent the early part of the series on the outside looking in. She’s just a kid, but she’s found herself with a seat at the table having to hear all sorts of stuff that informs her future. That’s what we will see in the fifth and final season — Joanie’s future and what it looks like.

Moving into the start of season 5, you are going to see Joanie’s story play out as she works to get to the truth about what happened to Allison. That’s going to be an important part of her story … but it’s far from the only part. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Anna Paquin describes her process of getting to prepare for the role — to go along with that, she talks a little about why she’s in Montauk in the first place:

I did a full marathon of all the episodes when I was hired to make sure I fully understood the world of the show — it was helpful to get to know my onscreen parents as their characters and learn about Joanie’s childhood. What can you tease about grown-up Joanie? She’s a coastal engineer and is, I think, appropriately cynical about the prognosis of the planet from an environmental standpoint. She ends up in Montauk on an assignment from work.

What we learn about Joanie through this statement is quite simple: She’s at the tip of Long Island on the basis of circumstance. She’s not there because she can solely look for answers, but since she’s there, why not take advantage?

This season is going to be a chance to learn about Joanie, and also for us to learn about the message of The Affair, as well. We think of this show mostly as one that is out to prove that you can run from your past, but it may always find a way to catch up.
