Succession season 2 trailer analysis: Logan wants the world

Succession season 1

Succession season 2 will be premiering on HBO come August 11 and if you weren’t psyched for it already, you really should be.

This is going to be an absurd batch of episodes — most everything within this show is. Logan Roy has turned his media empire int something vast and intimidating; he makes underlings shake in their boots. He also hasn’t done the best job of figuring out who is going to be the right person for the job after he is gone, something that the trailer over at the link here suggests. Within that trailer, you see more family in-fighting as everyone wants to get a leg up … and some are willing to go to drastic lengths in order to make sure that those around them are humiliated.

If we had to stake a bet in someone in this family to be worthy, it would be Shiv — she seems to be the one most content to watch and observe rather than just act … not to think that this is all she does, either. The thing about running a business or appealing to someone’s better judgment, though, is that the right candidate doesn’t always win. You have to be in the right place at the same time and you also need to be doing everything within your power to properly appeal to the egos of those around you.

Beyond the family battles that you’ll see in season 2, there’s also a plan put in place for a corporate takeover in order to expand the overall empire. There are also questions about Logan’s health and those are the sort of thing that could end up accelerating a lot of the other questions that are asked within the series. One of the things that we’ve come to know about Succession through the first season is that so much of its entertainment comes via it constantly being on the edge of a cliff. There’s a sense of urgency among the characters that a change could be coming and they need to be prepared for it. We don’t want to see Logan go anywhere soon, but there has to be that fear of Logan going somewhere. If that doesn’t happen, the show’s overall premise feels a little more flimsy.
