Magnum PI season 2 filming begins with traditional Hawaiian blessing

Magnum PI season 2 may not be airing on CBS until Friday, September 27, but filming on the latest batch of episodes is now underway!

If you look above, you can see most of the cast and crew, including stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang and Amy Hill, took part in a traditional Hawaiian blessing in honor of work being done on new episodes. Per CBS, “Kahu (Officiant) Kordell Kekoa officiated the ceremony, which included traditional royal maile leis, Oli Aloha (welcoming chant), and Pule Ho’oku’u (closing prayer). In honor of the show’s second season, the ceremony centered around the connections we make by using two traditional maile leis to symbolize how the production, its island home and the viewers create a ‘gift.'”

Traditional Hawaiian blessing have been a part of the greater Peter Lenkov universe for some time; Hawaii Five-0 has often kicked of its seasons with blessings of its own, though this season for it is a tad unorthodox. If you didn’t know, Hawaii Five-0 season 10 started filming recently in Los Angeles for an episode both written and directed by Alex O’Loughlin. It may not be the first one to air, but you’ll get to see it during the early going of its season.

So what should you expect to see on Magnum PI season 2? We don’t think that there’s going to be a movement to fundamentally change the show given that it does a great job at what it already does. This is a show that’s built up a great ensemble of fun characters that are similar enough to the original to be familiar, but also unique enough to carve out it’s own piece of cake. It gives you some of that sense of visual idealism that you get from any program set in Hawaii, but also doesn’t forget about the fact that there also need to be some high stakes and a lot of danger along the way.

We’re also still crossing our fingers for some sort of formal crossover between Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. There were a few little crossovers involving some characters in season 2, but nothing that mixed everyone together. Maybe that changes moving forward.

What do you want to see when it comes to Magnum PI season 2?
