When it comes to Sarah Paulson and American Horror Story: 1984, you’re getting a dose of bittersweet news today.
Let’s start with the good news that we’ve got on this subject today — you will be seeing more of Sarah Paulson. She’s been a part of every single season of the FX franchise to date so it makes sense that the trend would continue. Yet, it also feels like 1984 is the season that is down to buck a few different trends. We’ve learned already that Evan Peters is sitting out this season for the first time, and now, Variety reports that Paulson’s role will be reduced. While she will make an appearance, it may be limited to just a small cameo.
What’s the reasoning for this? We don’t think it’s due to some sort of desire for FX to say “see ya!” to one of their most famous performers. Instead, it’s a function of her own busy schedule, which includes movies and her upcoming show Ratched, which is airing over on Netflix and also hails from executive producer Ryan Murphy. This news feels inevitable, mostly because it’s felt for a long time like Paulson has just stepped into a cloning machine and been able to produce new versions of herself time and time again for various shows. How she’s been able to do as much as she has over the years has been amazing.
What American Horror Story: 1984 should do now is take advantage of the opportunity to create a new path and start a new sort of tradition for the show. Find new actors and blossom some different talent. We know that there are some series mainstays (think along the lines of Emma Roberts) who are coming back, but they’ll be joined by some new faces (think Gus Kenworthy). This entire season looks to pay homage to the era, and one of the first teasers that is out there for it suggests that we’re getting something that is firmly within the slasher-movie tradition.
The new season will premiere later this fall; FX tends to be secretive about their American Horror Story shows, but we’re sure that there will be a few different hints dropped here and there before we get to the big premiere actually happening.
