Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? If you’ve been away from the show the past few weeks, we come bearing an update on the subject.
Unfortunately, it’s not the sort of update that a lot of people out there are going to want to see. There is no new episode of the show tonight, or for the next couple of weeks, as well. The show will be back at the end of the month with more segments — at that time, we’ll be able to see more comedic segments and discussions. (We’re sure that over the next few weeks, there will be plenty of headlines from the world that John Oliver misses out on … unfortunately.)
For those of you who still want as much of John Oliver as possible, we imagine that we’ll be seeing a good bit of him over the next couple of weeks. With the upcoming The Lion King remake hitting movie theaters over the next couple of weeks, we’ve got a feeling that he will use a lot of his hiatus to promote the work that he does as Zazu in the film. (We do still find this casting to be hilarious, given that Oliver once compared himself to a parrot that works at the bank. Zazu isn’t all that far off from that.)
Want more Oliver? Then go back and watch him as Ian Duncan in Community. While his appearances on that show faded over time, he did some really funny stuff and reminded us that John is more than just a guy who sits behind the desk — as we saw on both The Daily Show or now Last Week Tonight. (Of course, we know quite well that he does a great job at sitting behind a desk. He’s better at this than most.)
When John does return, we imagine that there will be another run of episodes, and then another few small hiatuses throughout the late summer/early fall. This is probably going to be the longest hiatus between now and when the season ends, which typically happens in November. After that, John goes on hiatus for around a couple of months before returning with the new season. It’s the cyclical nature of being a Last Week Tonight fan so many seasons in.
