The Bachelorette: Does Mike Johnson placement change Bachelor odds?

Mike Johnson

Who will be the next star of The Bachelor? Through the next couple of weeks, we imagine that this is going to be a talking point on The Bachelorette just as much as the contestants are … and we definitely understand why. This is a show that does have a tendency to pluck contestants from the end of the most-recent season, and while there are exceptions (Arie Luyendyk, Juan Pablo Galavis, and Jake Pavelka), most of the picks are people who place in the top four on the Bachelorette season beforehand. Mike Johnson, meanwhile, was sent home Monday.

Is Mike about to be penalized for being eliminated prior to hometown dates? It’s something that you do have to wonder at this point. One of the things that The Bachelor tends to look at more than anything else for their gigs is point of view. Based on where we are going entering Monday night’s new episode, we are going to know the point of view of Peter, Tyler oh, Jed, and even Luke so much more than we are going to learn about Mike. He’s just not going to have the same amount of screen time as some of these other contenders, and in the past, that has been a real damaging factor. Sure, you can say that two of these guys in Luke and Jed aren’t contenders to be the Bachelor at all. It really feels at the moment to be between Mike, Peter, and Tyler.

Still, with Peter the show does have a very easy-to-market premise. We’re talking here about a pilot, and they can stamp planes all over the place just like they did when Jake Pavelka had the leading role so many years ago. With Tyler, you have arguably one of the most popular contestants in the recent history of The Bachelorette, or really all of Bachelor Nation as a whole. What Mike offers is a different perspective, someone who has a clearly established emotional story, and a historic element given that he would be the first black male lead. There’s a lot that is going for him, but unfortunately, the one thing going against him is time. This is where Bachelor in Paradise could enter the equation.

If Mike goes to Paradise and ends up being extremely popular in the process, maybe that makes him a little bit more of a contender. There was a time in which going on Paradise seem like a negative when it comes to you being The Bachelor, but we’ve seen now both Nick Viall and also Colton Underwood get the gig after spending some time there. All bets are off in this modern era of the franchise, where ABC has become increasingly harder to predict and they don’t always go along with what the fans perceive to be the obvious move. Mike would be a great lead, but with so many options it makes the search trickier than ever before.
