Doctor Who season 12 could be preceded by ‘bonus’ episode

Ever since the moment that Doctor Who season 12 was first confirmed to be premiering in 2020, we had a number of different questions about what could come on the other side of it. Take, for example, whether or not we’d get a Christmas/New Year’s Special leading up to the show coming on the air.

In a lot of ways, this move makes sense — Doctor Who winter specials have been a tradition for many years. For quite a long time, these were a tradition that aired on Christmas Day. Yet, the series changed things around for 2018/2019 by bringing you a special on New Year’s Day. That was a change that worked, given the nature of the story … and there could still be more coming up.

According to a new report from the Radio Times, there are plans at the moment for there to be some sort of special coming up this coming winter, prior to the formal start of season 12. It could air on a holiday like Christmas or New Year’s, but that is not currently guaranteed. Odds are, it’s just some sort of standalone story that the producers could use to give everyone some classic Doctor Who entertainment. It doesn’t have to be tied to the holiday season, but it does have to give people another dose of HYPE atop further hype to get people all the more psyched-up for when season 12 premieres in 2020.

Our feeling — go completely out of left field when devising this story. We think that Doctor Who did provide a generous dose of nostalgia in bringing the Daleks into the New Year’s Special at the start of the year; because of that, there’s a little less pressure to play to nostalgia here. Just do what feels right and come up with a cool story.

At the moment, we’re looking at the upcoming Doctor Who special as some sort of glorious appetizer, a creation that (fingers crossed) will set the tone for a cool meal coming in the new year.
