Poldark season 5 notes: George’s future; a Ross – Demelza kiss

Poldark

With us getting ever closer to Poldark season 5 airing in the UK, we’re pleased that there are an abundance of different stories out there all about it! The past couple of weeks have afforded us an opportunity to hear more about the story and the actors’ journey than the months before that, and we hardly imagine it grinding to a halt until the show is back in the air. Signs point to a British TV launch next month, and then a big premiere this fall on PBS in America.

While there are a number of characters who are of interest now as we encroach upon the home stretch, George Warleggan has to be at the center of some of it. How can he not? He’s in one way a vile human, but in another surprisingly vulnerable. There’s a lot more to him than perhaps anyone would care to know or assume, and a part of the fun comes in seeing some of that depth explored. Maybe the most fundamental way to describe him as a character is a villain with feelings — and for Jack Farthing, he probably appreciates that characterization. It’s easier to play a character when there is so much more to them just being pure evil.

So where will George’s story pick up in season 5? He may still hold rage towards Ross, but it actually seems as though he’s slowed somewhat (season 4 finale spoiler alert!) by the death of Elizabeth. He’s still wrestling with that pain and struggling to inch forward from it. That’s some of what Farthing describes in a new BBC interview from the show’s recent Cornwall-set premiere event:

“George is grieving significantly … he gave a huge amount of his heart and himself to Elizabeth. He can’t really see a future without her, right now. He’s come a long way. He’s broadened — we all have. When we first met them, they were one thing … The more time you have with a character, the more you see of them.”

Farthing also notes that “there’s been a great pleasure for me in seeing underneath [some of the superficial layers and into] his softness and the chinks in his armor. There’s definitely a lot of [vulnerability] in this series.” It’s fair to wonder what George’s endgame will be within this show, but we are excited and ultimately relieved that it’s not just any one thing. The multi-faceted nature of the man is one of the great reasons for excitement.

Happy anniversary to Ross and Demelza!

As the show’s official Twitter notes, today marks the wedding anniversary of the popular couple! They also give you a small look at a season 5 kiss in celebration. It’s not exactly a lot to go on, but that’s sort of the motto for most of the upcoming season in general. Unless you’ve been at the right place at the right time, you probably haven’t seen too much as of yet.
