There isn’t much information about Big Little Lies season 2 episode 4 that HBO released in advance of tonight’s episode 3. There isn’t really any reason to share some when you consider the title: “She Knows.” That’s about as powerful and important a title as they come.
With that in mind, let’s try to take a larger gaze now towards the story that is coming up. What does who know? More than likely, the title is a reference to Meryl Streep’s character of Mary Louise Wright knowing at least something in regards to Perry — or, it’s a reference to her potentially learning something. That’s already been teased in promos, with Mary Louise making it clear that she doesn’t believe for a split-second that her son died because of a fall. This is why she is there — there may be a part of her who is in mourning and whats to be around Celeste and others, but really, she wants answers. She’s also getting to a point where she realizes that many people have them and she needs to get to the bottom of all of it.
Episode 4 effectively represents the midway point of this story, which to us means that this is where some of the story will get going into high gear even further. Truth is, Big Little Lies wouldn’t be anywhere near as engaging of a story in the event that Mary Louise never figures anything out — it’s so great because of the spiral, and not because things stay in stasis. We’ll see things go from bad to worse and then also possibly catastrophic, and we wouldn’t be surprised if, by the end of the season, there is another stunning moment that changes the world of Monterey forever. If the show wants to do a third season (which doesn’t seem to be on the radar just yet), there could be a moment down the road that sets off some of that conversation.
Yet, for now, just marinate on that title a little bit — “She Knows,” and what it could be. No matter what information Mary Louise has, is it really going to be enough to lead to some sort of arrest? If it’s not that, is there still something that she can do in order to wreck their reputations? We know that for some of these characters, public perception matters just as much as anything else. They like being atop the Monterey social pyramid; it’s something that they hold dear.
