America’s Got Talent video: Izzy & Eaton’s contemporary dance audition
We’ll be the first to admit that we’ve become somewhat numb to kid dancers on this show. There have been so many, and the majority of them are basically the same. You see some talented kids come out with some sort of fun story about how long they’ve danced together, and then they do some moves that are entertaining enough but not exactly original. We’ve just seen so many kids do ballroom dance at this point that it feels like we’re just living through some sort of talent-based Groundhog Day.

Yet, here’s the good news about Izzy & Easton from tonight’s new episode of the show — they don’t actually feel like the same exact act that we’ve seen a million times before with this show. They actually feel special, and feel like performers we’d want to watch a dozen or so times over. A part of what makes them stand out, first and foremost, is their choice in routine — contemporary. We don’t see too many kid dancers take on this lyrical style and it’s really difficult to execute. It’s not so much about high energy, which we know that kids can replicate; it’s instead more about emotion, character, and storytelling — while also being able to do the movements and some of the difficult jumps and spins.
Izzy & Easton pull all of this off! It’s a fantastic routine themed around a guy going to war and his sister trying to encourage him not to. While it’s serious subject matter for kids to play, they make it believable and some of their moves are really stellar. They may have a little work to do on the steadiness of their spins still, but we’re talking here about contemporary dancers who are still many years away from being on So You Think You Can Dance. They’re well on their way to being some of the best dancers in the country, if not the world, if they keep up their commitment to their craft.
Could these two actually be the rare kid dancer contenders on America’s Got Talent? We still say it’s an uphill battle for dancers to win this show in 2019, but they’ve got a good chance of at least getting into the semifinals.
