The Affair season 5: Three expectations before series finale ends

The Affair season 5 will be airing on Showtime in just a matter of months, and the producers for the series have understandably kept a tight lid on a lot of things. Nonetheless, we’re starting to get a good sense on some of what could happen, in addition to of course some of the things that we’d like to see. We know that Allison is gone from the show, just as we also know that Joshua Jackson is no longer a series regular. Meanwhile, it’s also known that Anna Paquin is appearing as an adult version of Joanie and at least some of the upcoming story is coming in a climate-ravaged future as she desperately seeks out answers.

So while we know a few details, this article is more about venturing into the great unknown, the islands of closure on the other side of the metaphorical sea. This is about laying the groundwork for some of the things we’d like to see unfold before this series comes to an end.

1. What happened to Cole? – Even if Jackson is not going to be coming back full-time, we hope that there are at least a few appearances for him. Cole was an integral part of this story and it’s clear at this point that The Affair wouldn’t be what it is without him. Getting more of an understanding of his future is integral to the fabric of this series. We don’t know if we can envision him fully happy, but his story still deserves an ending.

2. Will there be peace between Noah and Helen? – The first teaser that is out there is very much about the idea of forgiveness, and whether or not something like that is even possible for someone like Noah who has done some of the things he has to Helen. This is going to be a rocky season for him as he tries to showcase that he’s not the sole product of his mistakes. We’re not sure that they’ll ever ben in a place of full-on contentment, but through this final season, we’re at least anticipating some progress.

3. Is there justice for Allison? – We do anticipate the truth will come out eventually, and we firmly expect that truth to include Ben having been responsible for Allison’s death. The question that then unfolds is whether or not Ben is even still alive if Joanie is the one who finds it. It’ll be so many years from what happened and as The Affair has so obviously taught us, closure is a series of curves and crooked doodles. It’s far from a straight line and peace may have to come within oneself … it may not happen within the legal system in a more traditional way.
