Outlander season 5: Caitriona Balfe on Claire’s idea of home

Outlander season 4

Moving into Outlander season 5, time is of the essence — perhaps more than it’s ever been. Jamie and Claire are now in their fifties, they’re parents, and they’re also new grandparents. They understand the value of every single moment for many different reasons. They are characters who spent decades away from each other, and beyond that, they’ve spent the past few months on the road to bring Roger back. The amount of time that Jamie and Claire have had together and actually settled is very little. They’ve learned to appreciate every moment and in the early going of season 5, this is likely something that you’ll see manifest itself in an important, emotional way.

Will there be more trouble coming Jamie and Claire’s way? Absolutely, but we imagine that there are going to be a few moments where the two get to enjoy one another’s company as well. They’ll also relish in getting to build up Fraser’s Ridge into more of a living, breathing community — it’s not just a place that is separate from the rest of society. It’s a home in every sense of the word.

Speaking in a new interview with Parade while at the recent Emmy promotional event at Westfield Century City, Caitriona had the following to say about the element of home that is now in the show, and how she’s spent so long in order to find it:

I think, definitely, for Claire, home is her life with Jamie. Whereas Jamie was always connected to Scotland and that was his home, Claire has always been trying to find out what home means to her. She has always felt untethered. It is only when she meets Jamie that she really has that anchor. Then Brianna is the product of that and, therefore, these people are her home.

What’s going to motivate Claire perhaps more than anything? A battle to preserve and maintain her home. This is going to be at the forefront of season 5, with the characters being on the brink of the American Revolution. Jamie and Claire will find themselves in a situation where they need to do what they can to hold down the fort with the threat of the British bearing down on them — the moment that they realize that Jamie and Claire are against them rather than with them when it comes to the Regulators, all of that peace is over … at least for the time being. There is going to be a time when they’re able to be on the other side of it presumably, but that won’t be over for many years. They have to enjoy the peaceful moments while they can, since they may not otherwise have them for ages.

Season 5 of Outlander likely premieres in 2020, so you’ll get to see a little more at that point as to what Jamie and Claire’s struggle for home looks like.
