America’s Got Talent video: Meet magician Dom Chambers!
We’ll be honest — we liked him before he started talking, given his sense of humor and story about forming a bond through magic with his granddad. He also said that his worst gig ever was doing magic at a funeral.
At first, the surprising thing is that Simon Cowell doesn’t seem into him — even though him being able to pull a glass of beer out of nowhere was pretty impressive! It felt like this was a skeptical crowd in general, and one glass of beer clearly wasn’t going to suffice. That’s why he was able to pull out multiple glasses of beer, at times almost from thin air. He took multiple ones out of the same bag, turned a tiny wine bottle into a big one, and at one point, even pulled a glass of beer out of his shoe. That wasn’t as impressive, though, as when he poured a glass of beer from this shoe at the very end.
By the end of this, there was no way Simon could deny his awesomeness — standing ovation all around.
What do we love the most about this?
For starters, it’s a different sort of magic than what’s been popular on this show as of late! We’ve already seen a tone of mentalist acts, and we’ve certainly seen plenty of card magicians. There was already good close-up magic early on this season. This was a fun, well-executed series of tricks from a guy with a great personality and sense of humor. We like this sort of magic since it’s fairly universal. So long as you tolerate beer and have a good sense of humor, it’s hard to be cynical over how this trick is done.
This is a fantastic audition; yet, he’s probably not getting a golden buzzer since AGT doesn’t tend tot ease those leading into new episodes. He’s going to need to, come Judge Cuts, reinvent himself and do something totally different. Magicians can’t get by with any mistakes; it’s all about making people believe that you’re legitimately some sort of wizard who can make silly glasses of beer pop up out of nowhere.
