Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 3 video: What’s wrong with Smurf?

Animal Kingdom season 3

Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 3 may be life-and-death or Smurf … or at least it could be at some point.

Think in terms of where episode 2 ended — were it not for the promo below, we’d be worried that Ellen Barkin was immediately leaving the show. Heck, we’re worried anyway. We even recorded a video of our own about it — check out the bottom of this article for more insight and subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube. (Did you know? We’ve also got an Animal Kingdom playlist with some other updates.)

The state of Smurf is going to a key element to episode 3 — it has to be. If it’s ignored, viewers will throw metaphorical tomatoes at the screen. We still don’t know precisely why she passed out, and that’s why she is getting an MRI in the promo. She probably is in the same position as many of us, questioning as to what exactly is going on — and asking conspiracy theories aplenty. For example, did someone poison her? was this a drug overdose? Is she suffering from some other ailment? All are good questions — as is what Smurf questioning her mortality looks like. It could cause her to think differently, or to act crazier and bolder than ever before. (A crazier Smurf? Buckle up for that…)

Here’s another thing to ponder — why are we getting the Smurf flashbacks? Why now? If there’s one reason to worry about her fate long-term, that’s it. Flashbacks are the sort of thing you often get when some serious you-know-what is going down in the present.

What else is going down?

Frankie’s operation could be a cornerstone of the upcoming episode and, obviously, for good reason. This is a woman going after some valuable stuff and she’s recruiting Craig and the Codys to be her backup. Trusting Frankie, though, is like trusting a snake to not slither away. We don’t know if they should do it — she could make them money, but it may not be what’s promised. She’s also just as self-serving, if not more so, than anyone else within this dog-eat-dog (or snake eat snake?) world. She’s just a little bit better at keeping her intentions masked.

Also, J is going to continue to try and keep Mia on his side — and perhaps use and control her a little too much. J’s spending so much time worrying about Smurf and her role in his operation that he’s missing the threat right under his nose. Smart, seductive women are the biggest threats to the Cody boys — they’re letting either their feelings or the promise of something more get in the way of a bigger picture, and we don’t think that’s about to stop anytime soon. We even say this for J, a guy who does also feel numb and emotionless otherwise.
