Billions season 5 premiere date hopes for Damian Lewis, cast

Billions season 4

There’s going to be a Billions season 5 premiere date somewhere. It may be out on the farthest reaches of the horizon, but it’s there and we’re just going to have to wait for it to inch ever closer.

In the midst of this waiting game, we can at least rejoice in the fact that there will be a season 5, and that Showtime isn’t abandoning one of its biggest hits — now or anytime soon.

Obviously, it makes sense that Showtime’s going to want to keep this show around, given that it has two of the biggest actors in television and Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis. Yet, you never want to take stuff for granted. There was a period of time where you could say “okay, maybe Billions isn’t going to be the hit that we think that it is.” It didn’t become incredible right away — yet, over time, it’s proven itself to be smart, intense, and even at times funny. It pushes the envelope and challenges its characters. Even if somehow it constantly has these said characters often avoid severe punishment, there’s something fun about watching them bob and weave various charges, trials, and tribulations. That’s why we’re stoked to see what Billions season 5 will bring. It really is a cat-and-mouse game, but it’s one where the cat never seems to catch the mouse.

So when could Billions season 5 actually premiere? That mythical premiere date is probably not going to be announced until the fall or the winter, and it’s fairly safe to say at some point in the late winter or the spring. This is a show on a once-a-year cycle — they don’t want to keep you waiting too long. Think of it as kind of similar to Shameless in that regard. It’s a little bit less like Homeland, which is taking its time for its later seasons largely because it’s going to all sorts of different places in the world. Billions is mostly centrally-located and they don’t at least have to worry about that. They just have to perfect the story and make it as intense and awesome as it really should be.

As for what the story should be, let’s hope for another reinvention. Coming into season 4, what was exciting was the idea of a truce between Chuck Rhoades and Bobby Axelrod. You saw a different dimension, and you saw the enemies become frenemies. It wasn’t really anything more than that, now was it? Now that this era of the show has come to a close, you can find some new ways to build up these characters and keep us guessing around every single turn.

How long can Billions last?

It’s pretty simple — however long that the writers find a way to make the roller-coaster ride exciting. If it feels like you’re doing the same drops over and over, it’s time to shut the operation down.
