Songland review: Josh Logan, Charisma, Adam Friedman, & will.i.am

Songland

Tonight, Songland episode 2 brought you will.i.am as the artist in need of a good song — and as it turns out, a big part of what makes this show so great is its ability to be so malleable. The show and the music can ultimately ebb and flow depending on who the artist is and also what ideas the songwriters have.

Below, you can check out our take on the three songs that made it to the end of the show tonight — once you check these out, watch the video below for more discussion! On the other side, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for some other news.

Josh Logan, “Boxes” – The first artist tonight was a super-talented guy who had a really catchy chorus, but could it be something more. The changes for Josh’s song came about at the last minute — his daughter was set to give birth the day that he was performing the final version of his song for Will! There were a lot of lyrics that changed at the last minute — personally, this was our favorite song when it comes to the beat and the message of it. However, we just don’t know if it was the right song for Will.

Charisma, “Invincible” – She’s a young woman from India who was ready to come over and try to make a part of her dream come true. Her song transformed in order so she could perform it in front of Will — not only that, but she got Ryan Tedder to perform with her near the end! The final version of the song ended up causing a dance party among all of the producers and Will, who really turned this into an interesting song.

Adam Friedman, “Be Nice” – The first version of this had a nice structure and could turn into something more, but it did take a little bit of time in order to get the soul of it down a little bit. This song had a little more darkness and intensity to it when he came out to perform it the second time. We didn’t really love the versus the second time around, but it was definitely cool when Will went up there and performed with him in the end.

The funny thing is that at first, we didn’t see the song — yet, it worked! Adam won, but he decided that he wanted ALL three songs for his upcoming Black Eyed Pies album. “Be Nice” is just the one that he decided to make a music video out of.

CarterMatt Verdict

Songland was awesome tonight. Two episodes in and we love the style, the substance, and all of the cool stuff that was injected into this show from start to finish. There’s nothing really to complain about here, at least so long as you love artistry mixed with a little creativity.

Sure, this was like an “everybody wins” episode, but we’re not mad at it since all of the songs were legitimately cool by the end.
