Poldark season 5: The case for moving forward US premiere date

Poldark

At the moment, we know that we’re closing in on Poldark season 5 premiering in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, at the same exact time, it seems like American viewers are going to have to wait a little while longer. There is no official news at the moment as to when the show’s returning to PBS, but it is more than likely going to be this fall and we know that for many viewers out there, that’s a long time to wait.

So is there a good case towards moving the Poldark season 5 premiere date a little bit earlier in the States? We would argue so, mostly because we think it’s valuable to have a sort of community viewing experience.

While we know that American viewers could just wait an extra few months and enjoy the show in the time period that they usually do, there’s just something nice about everyone being able to dive into this world at roughly the same part of the year. Poldark is that sort of show that inspires community, that keeps people talking and thinking about Cornwall and it’s wonderful waves and rolling hills. It’s inspired one of the most passionate fan communities out there, and it’s the sort of show that really is one in a million.

Also, couldn’t you make the case that airing Poldark season 5 at roughly the same time in the US as in the UK would boost the ratings a little bit? It seems like it’s at least a good possibility. It gives more exposure to the series, and it keeps spoilers a little bit more at bay. Yes, we understand that Poldark is based on both the book series and a prior TV show, but there are some people out there who aren’t really aware of that. They may be flying blind as they dive into just about every iteration of the program.

Also, for viewers in America, it just makes a little bit of sense to have Poldark air at a time when there’s a little bit less in the way of competition on. After all, this fall there will be NFL football airing on Sunday nights, and that’s to go along with The Walking Dead and everything that’s going to be happening in terms of the primetime TV season on most of the major networks. Isn’t this really perfect summer viewing?

So while it may be going somewhat against the grain for PBS to do something like this, especially since they aired every season of Downton Abbey so much later after it aired in the UK, we really wish they would consider it for Poldark — we don’t necessarily mean that it air at the same exact time as in the UK, but maybe seven or eight hours later. It would be a perfect way to tribute the series in America, and really help it to descend off into the sunset. Of course, we understand that there may be other issues at play here, such as rights or licensing or some sort of other agreement that makes airing the show immediately in America complicated. Regardless of the issue, though, we just wish that something would happen where a proper agreement here could be ultimately panned out.
