Grey’s Anatomy nixed a Meredith Grey love interest — but when?

Meredith Grey

At this point, it’s fairly clear that Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy has a pretty fantastic love interest in Dr. Andrew DeLuca. As it turns out, though, she could have had another in the past if the writers had stuck to their original plan.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, show executive producer Krista Vernoff confirms that at one point, there were plans back in season 14 to introduce someone new for Meredith to be with. What happened? Well, this is a case of the writers changing things up after a spoiler ended up making it online. Check out some of what she had to say:

“[TVLine’s] Michael Ausiello found out that we were casting a European scientist as a potential love interest for Meredith [Ellen Pompeo] … When that got leaked, I went into the writers’ room and said, ‘That’s not interesting to me anymore. What else could this character be?’”

As it turns out, this character ended up becoming Marie Cerone, who ended up having a key role in season 14 as Meredith tried to advance one of her projects — and clashed with her along the way.

In the end, Vernoff makes it clear that they’re pretty happy that the story ended up going in the direction it did, mostly because the Marie Cerone character ended up causing a good bit of drama and was completely separate from any sort of romantic storyline. Also, it’s kind of tough to introduce a love interest that you know is probably not going to stick around in some capacity. Grey’s Anatomy did that already with Scott Speedman character, who turned up for an episode and for a few months after that, there were all sorts of clamoring to have him back on a more regular capacity. It never turned into anything and we don’t think it’s ever going to come to pass. Why would it now?

Ultimately, at this point can’t you say that everything worked out as it should? Meredith just told DeLuca that she loves him, and while things for her or not looking altogether great because of the insurance fraud storyline, we’re reasonably hopeful for the future of the couple. Then again, this is Grey’s Anatomy, and we absolutely know better than to guarantee something when it comes to two characters’ longevity. At least there are some feelings there and Meredith has been through enough in terms of relationships to know that they come with some highs and lows.
