Kodi Lee gets America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer from Gabrielle Union

Pompeyo Family Dogs

On tonight’s new episode of America’s Got Talentwe had a chance to see the first Golden Buzzer of the entire season. With that, of course, means an opportunity to discuss whether or not a given judge made the right decision. We’re going to be discussing Kodi Lee in this piece, and we’re absolutely excited to do so.

Let’s be clear, we’ve had our fair share of opinions on Golden Buzzers over the years. Some of the judges are way too linear with how often they press them (i.e. mostly for singers), whereas some others just make questionable choices. Yet, we haven’t had a chance to see what new judges Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union are going to do with the power.

In pure America’s Got Talent fashion, of course the series made us wait until the very end in order to see it. That did cut out some of the suspense. When Kodi Lee came out, it was clear that none of that mattered. We didn’t need suspense — we could just sit down and relish every second of this performance. Kodi is a blind and autistic performer who had a magical voice. We had no idea that he was going to go out there and perform like he did — “A Song for You” is not an easy song to do, but he did it with power and commitment. There was such an intimacy to it, like he could communicate through song in a way that he was unable to in other forms.

We hope that this inspires a lot of people out there — we’re legally blind ourselves and we always feel like there are not enough heroes in this community sometimes. Kodi is that hero, someone who was unassuming and just wanted nothing other than to show his talent. He’s authentic and we’re so excited to see where he goes from here moving through the remainder of this competition.

As for the Golden Buzzer moment, it came courtesy of one of the show’s two new judges in Gabrielle Union. This was a worthy choice, and it’s an audition we will remember. It’s not about being cynical or talking about too many singers getting Golden Buzzers. It’s about this moment and this performance — we agree with Simon that this is something worth remembering for some time moving forward. For Gabrielle, she related both to Kodi’s performance but also his mother, as a mother himself. She recognized what that moment would mean for both of them.

Congrats to Kodi for everything — we’ll see where things go from here.
